About Oradea

Oradea, the county town of Bihor, is one of the most important economic, social and cultural centres in the north-west of Romania, having maintained these characteristics throughout its history. Situated on the banks of the river Crișul Repede, which divides the city into almost two equal halves, it is the gateway to the Central and Western European world. Located about 10 km from Borș, the largest border point on the western border, Oradea is the tenth largest city in Romania.

A small selection of things to see in Oradea:

Țării Crișurilor Museum
It is one of Romania’s great museum complexes. This cultural-scientific unit holds more than 300,000 visible and active exhibits, but in its “custody” there are more than 900,000 units of evidence, forming a cultural and intercultural heritage of inestimable spiritual and material value. It has four sections (natural sciences, history, ethnography, art) and three branches: the Iosif Vulcan Memorial Museum, the Ady Endre Memorial Museum and the Aurel Lazar Memorial House.
Regina Maria Theatre
THE STATE THEATRE dominates Ferdinand Square with its imposing appearance. Located in the centre of a veritable architectural museum, this eclectic-style building stands out for its exceptional design. The construction, so much desired by the municipality at the time, was entrusted to the renowned Vienna construction company “Fellner and Helmer”. An art expert can admire neoclassical, neo-Renaissance decorative elements on the facades and the predominance of neo-baroque style inside.
Fortress of Oradea
With a nearly 1,000-year history, the Fortress of Oradea has all the advantages of being a top tourist attraction for the city on the Criș Repede’s banks, as well as for western Romania and, more broadly, for central-eastern Europe. Its historical background, architecture, and legend surrounding specific events that have formed its existence all work together to offer it an attraction and individuality that many other monuments aspire for.
The Fortress of Oradea is a significant historical and urban development landmark for the region.
“Black Eagle” Palace
If we consider architecture in the Secession style, THE BLACK EAGLE COMPLEX is possibly the most significant architectural achievement in Oradea and Transylvania. Sztarill Ferenc, an engineer, coordinated its construction, which began on the site of the old Black Eagle Inn in 1907 and was finished in December 1908.

The Black Eagle Palace has a glass-covered interior passage, which separates it from other examples of secession architecture in our nation and brings attention of tourists.

The Zoo
Located in the south-west of Oradea, the Oradea Zoo has one of the most favourable habitats, being under a vegetal bridge made up of more than 40 species of trees, secular trees representing 20% of the flora here. The Oradea Zoo dates back to 1960 when the first animals were brought in, but for the general public it was opened in 1962 and then expanded and modernized between 2010 and 2013.
